Our
Philosophy.
Modern Rust was created on the belief
that with a little patience and creativity, an unwanted piece of lumber could be reborn as something functional, worthwhile
and wonderful.
Modern Rust originals are handcrafted
from waste, reclaimed or rescued (surplus) construction lumber.
Our water-based stains and finishes are hand-applied, rendering each finished piece an exquisite individual. Modern Rust pieces
are designed to accommodate
those living in a small studio or a country estate alike. Troublesome assembly and transfers are a thing of the past and since
green furniture remains at an unattainable price point for most, Modern Rust has been modeled to bridge the gap by offering
an affordable green furniture line. Both modern and rustic, Modern
Rust is Farmhouse, re-defined.
Our Process.
Our pieces are made using Douglas Fir with a bit of Pine used for the building
of brackets and supports. We work with recycled lumber, which needs to be conditioned for furniture use. Each piece of lumber
is unique and has its own set of characteristics. Our furniture is crafted by hand, so some variations in size and finish
are to be expected. To reduce waste, we always try to build with what we have at hand, so there may be slight variation from
one piece to the next. Please note that knots, cracks and imperfections within the piece are part of the charm of purchasing
furniture made with recycled materials and are to be expected.
Order to completion time line is approximately 6-7 weeks. Please note building
of your Modern Rust originals may take longer given that the entire process is done by hand and the pieces are made from materials
that are not readily available. But we promise you that the furniture is well worth the wait. We appreciate that you are excited
to receive your furniture, but please allow us to contact you upon completion. We will email you when your order is ready
and scheduled to be picked up by one of our carriers. The carrier will then contact you with the delivery details.
Details.
By their nature, salvaged/recycled planks may be somewhat uneven, and may cup or bow slightly
over time. The planks will adjust themselves to their new environment (your home's temperature, dryness vs. humidity, etc.) accordingly. The adjustment to the new environment will sometimes
mean a small change in dimensions which may present itself as a gap between the planks or small cracks. Stain touch up kits
are available upon request.
The Principle.
B A H R A M S A D I G H I A N has a BS in Environmental Design
from the University of Oklahoma and has been designing furniture for over 25 years. He has experimented with many different
building technique and materials, and in 2004 started designing and building exclusively
using reclaimed/waste construction lumber. This
type of lumber is a difficult material to work with, but in his view
these were usable pieces that were being too easily discarded.
Modern Rust started with a three-foot
bench, and soon other pieces followed.
In addition to creating Modern Rust,
Bahram is the founder of Living/Storage/Quarters and holds 2 pending patents for electric propulsion systems.
